New Book: Growing a Kindergarten Movement in Aotearoa New Zealand by Helen May & Kerry Bethell

NZCER Press has just published a new book by esteemed Froebelian historians and early years experts (and former IFS President) Helen May and Kerry Bethell entitled Growing a kindergarten movement in Aotearoa New Zealand: Its people, purposes and politics. This excellent volume traces the history of the nation’s kindergarten movement from the earliest days of contact with Froebelian ideas to the adoption and adaptation of European kindergarten models to the unique context of Aotearoa New Zealand.  May’s and Bethell’s work highlights and contextualizes the contributions of pioneering individuals as well as the hard-won success of the New Zealand Kindergarten Union (now NZ Kindergartens) over the country’s nearly 100-year history of kindergarten education.  The book is rich with photographs and other images, drawn from The Kindergarten Heritage Collection of New Zealand, a vibrant, ongoing history project of the country’s national kindergarten organizations.
